The Token-2022 program extends SPL tokens with optional transfer fees collected on each move. When a stablecoin mint enables this hook, merchants and senders see slightly less than the nominal amount arrive — a detail easy to miss when pricing coffee in USDC.

How transfer fees differ from network fees

Solana network fees (paid in SOL) compensate validators. Token-2022 transfer fees stay inside the token program and go to a fee account defined at mint creation. Your wallet may show "amount sent" and "amount received" differently.

Merchant impact

If you price items at exactly 5.00 USDC but the mint charges a 0.1% transfer fee, you receive 4.995 USDC. For low-margin shops, aggregate these deltas in weekly reconciliation. Some wallets display fees upfront; others do not.

Checking a mint's configuration

Use a Solana explorer to inspect the mint account. Look for Token-2022 extensions and fee basis points. Our glossary entry links to the official extension documentation.
